Body Scan for Calm: Release Tension Head to Toe

Stress lives in the body before the mind ever names it — the shoulders that ride up, the clenched jaw, the shallow breath. A body scan walks your attention through your whole body and lets it drop.

Watch the Guided Practice

A guided body scan meditation that releases physical tension and stress from head to toe in about 5 minutes.

The 10-Minute Scan, Step by Step

  1. Get comfortable. Lie down (ideal before sleep) or sit. One hand on your belly. Close the eyes or soften the gaze.
  2. Take three slow breaths. Let each exhale be longer than the inhale — or start with the physiological sigh.
  3. The head and face. Notice tension in the jaw, forehead, and tongue. On your exhale, let it soften. The jaw is where stress hides first.
  4. The neck and shoulders. Let the shoulders release toward the floor as you breathe out. Pressure in the upper back will follow.
  5. The arms and hands. Fingers slowly uncurl. Mirror the movement with awareness.
  6. The chest and belly. Breathe into the belly and let the chest stay quiet. This deepens the rest response.
  7. The back. Let the floor support you. Re-scan the lower back, releasing grip.
  8. The hips, legs, and feet. Let the weight drop. Soften the feet, wiggle the toes, and rest.

When you reach a tense spot, don't force it — breathe into it and wait. The release often comes a breath later than you expect.

Why It Works

A body scan takes your attention out of the thought-loop and into physical sensation — which your nervous system reads as safety. It's also the closest thing to stopping racing thoughts without fighting them: the mind can only focus on one place at a time, and you're showing it somewhere quiet.

It's a natural final step of a wind-down routine and an antidote to carried stress. The full scan belongs to the Breathing & Grounding library and to How to Calm Your Mind & Body.
